i have a red tail boa and a ball python that a get different food for sometimes. ive heard that rats are somehow more nutritious than mice, is that true? When feeding snakes, are rats really more nutritious than mice?
yes it is, it's due to the way that rats store vitamins and minerals in its bodyWhen feeding snakes, are rats really more nutritious than mice?
Honestly, rats and mice basically have the same nutritional value. The only time people will tell you that mice are ';fattening'; is when they are pinkies. Rats are considered to be leaner than mice, but it really doesn't make a difference.
What is important is the size of your snake. The food should be the size of the largest part of the snake's body-1.5x larger at the most. I personally think it is great to alternate what you feed your snake. For instance one month of rats, and a couple weeks of mice after. The main reason many people prefer mice to rats is that rats will become extremely aggressive to the snake if not eaten right away. They can cause serious damage or possibly death to a snake that isn't hungry.
So again, both are basically the same in nutritional value, but rats are proven to be a little leaner than mice. Overweight snakes are usually fed rats more than mice to help the fat content in their system. I hope that I was of some help.
Best of luck! (:
